Enterprise Backup

What is
ENTERPRISE BACKUP
How important is your company data?  What role does that data play for the successfulness of your business and the ability to function as a company? Every company has data that is necessary for the business to survive and without that data, the company could possibly cease to be in business. Protecting the company data needs to be the number one priority.
Overview
HOW IT WORKS
Corporate Data

Why do I need to backup? And why do I need to have multiple copies of my data? The answer to this question is simple.  When backing up corporate data, copies of that backup data needs to be on several different media types and make sure at least one of those copies is off site.  The reason for multiple copies of that data is that many of the situations that contribute to the need to recover data involve the loss of reliable access to the production infrastructure. For enterprise backup the best plan to follow is to implement a 3-2-1 rule. At least three copies of the data, on (at least) two different media types, and (at least) one copy off site.

Many of the modern enterprise backup solutions include a backup disk target as part of their solution, to allow for keeping backups of the data on premises.  This is an excellent start.  In fact, many of these solutions will integrate with the primary data storage solutions to initiate hardware snapshots of primary data, then directly backing these snapshots to the backup disk target solutions. Then we need to discuss the 3rd copy of data.  And the idea of getting that copy offsite.  There are several ways to accomplish this task.  One of the most wide spread is the use of tape.  Backing up to local disk repository and then copying that off to tape and sending these tapes offsite to a secure storage facility.

Another option for getting a copy of the backup data offsite, which is growing in popularity, is cloud backup.  But do your homework first.  Does your cloud backup option have the levels of security that my company needs?

WHY YOU NEED ENTERPRISE BACKUP
Protect Your Company

Another strategy that is gaining in popularity is that many of the Enterprise Backup solutions include a cloud connection option.  Where local backups can reside on the local disk repository and then replicated to the cloud.  This can then be tied into recoverability options to recover in the cloud if needed.

This sets things up quite nicely for a relatively new offering that is being introduced, that of Backup as a Service (BaaS) and Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS).  These options can address many of the headaches and pain points that IT executives have known and feared for years.

Protecting the data, needs to be a priority.  Having a plan to recover that data is just as important.  Any Enterprise Backup solutions needs to include a recovery plan.  Without it, when you actually need to recover, things may not go as smoothly as you would like.

Another important thing to note is that Cloud Storage and Cloud backup are not necessarily the same thing.  Many of us use Cloud Storage for dropping files that we need to get access to from multiple locations, but this does not mean that dropping corporate application data into a cloud storage vendor will allow you to recover those applications in the event of a need.

Cloud backup includes the ability to put our data into the cloud in a consistent manner while also allowing us to recover those applications in that same order.

Benefit 1

If data is regularly backed up, backup copies can be a life savor in the event the data is damaged or lost or when systems become unavailable.
