What is
WIRELESS (WIFI 6)
Wi-Fi 6 is the latest generation of wireless standards just recently ratified as 802.11ax. In the past, Wi-Fi standards were also what the industry referred to as 802.11ac. With the latest version of Wi-Fi 802.11ax, it is being labeled Wi-Fi 6 since it is the 6th generation of Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi 6 uses both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands in comparison to 802.11ac (Gen 5), which only used the 5Ghz band in that standard.

HOW IT WORKS

Wi-Fi 6 is the first standard that can transfer data over 1Gbps, compared to the recent standards where it was more theoretical but not implemented in the real world. There have been a few enhancements. The algorithm has changed, and both up and down links support MIMO (multiple input multiple output) instead of only download like in Wi-Fi 5. Because of the higher throughput, the ethernet port now typically supports 2.5Gbps to eliminate bottlenecks of the previous standard 1Gbps ethernet ports.

Lower latency and higher user density are supported per AP due to the enhanced MU-MIMO design.  

  

Better battery life on devices and an increase in the new Target Wait Time (TWT) allows for devices to essentially sleep while waiting to receive packets from the AP. 

Wi-Fi 6 is not a great leap in new technology but has a few enhancements which have greatly increased the performance and efficiency of previous generations of wireless.    

Soon, an addition to Wi-Fi 6 will be here, referred to as Wi-Fi 6E. The FCC has opened more spectrum to increase the number of channels, allowing for higher speeds and less interference.
