Edge to Core Networking includes all the networking devices needed to provide the right kind of connectivity to support end users, servers, and storage, whether they are on a wired switch or a wireless access point. These devices include switches, access points (APs), routers, and firewalls. The network needs to support redundancy, power over ethernet (POE), multi-gigabit speeds, network access control (NAC), segmentation, and more.
Overview
HOW IT WORKS
STRUCTURE
When building the “Core,” redundancy is important. Organizations need to ensure the core switches are set up in a way so there are multiple redundant/load sharing links from the edge switches, and design the core so when one fails, all routing will still function seamlessly. Some ways to accomplish this are by using technologies such as virtual stacking, VSS, VPc, VSF, VSX, VRRP, etc. where a second core switch can take over the full load if one fails.
SWITCHES
Edge switches should have redundancy as well. Typically, they will be set up using backplane stacking or virtual stacking with redundant links to the core or distribution switches. Edge switches are being used for increasingly more varied types of devices other than PCs, printers, and APs. They are also being used for lights, door locks, surveillance cameras, and many other IoT functions. Keeping this in mind, the networks will require more redundancy built into them.

WHY YOU NEED CORE TO EDGE
VOICE, VIDEO, SURVEILLANCE

The network is the backbone of your business and needs to be available and secure 100% of the time. The network can also play a critical role in helping secure your endpoints by utilizing appropriate technologies, such   as NAC with network segmentation and Zero trust.

Newer APs use 2.5 Gbps interfaces, requiring the access switches to be upgraded to multi-gigabit to take advantage of the higher throughput and increasing POE requirements. More POE-enabled devices – like lighting, door locks, video surveillance cameras, IP phones, and PCs – are becoming more common. In short, redundancy, security technologies and higher speeds are needed between switches,
routers, and firewalls.
