The bottom line is what governs any business today, and that is never more true than in the ever-changing IT industry. As such, we’d like you to take a look at the VMware solution that HP has put together designed specifically to make the IT world easier to manage and more productive. VMware Server on ProLiant systems from the new HP brings mainframe-class attributes to industry-standard servers. On a single physical server, VMware Server, either the GSX or ESX product, enables the rapid creation of multiple virtual servers, each running either Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows 2000 or Linux plus your favorite applications in a secure, resource-protected environment. Technically speaking VMware Server products both deliver mainframe-class attributes to industry-standard servers; however, the audience served and the technical approach is slightly different. ESX server VMware ESX server runs natively on the server hardware, without a host operating system, and is designed for enterprise and departmental servers with up to eight processors. For booting and management, ESX Server incorporates a console operating system that is a customized version of Red Hat Linux 6.2. Applications, however, are run in virtual machines, each of which has its own operating system, not on the console operating system. GSX server GSX Server is designed for two to four processor workgroup, departmental and smaller enterprise servers. It runs as an application on top of Windows or Linux server operating systems but, nevertheless, still provides multiple secure, transportable, scalable virtual machines. Server consolidation Server consolidation with virtual machines effectively utilizes the capacity of your servers. Applications and infrastructure services running on dedicated systems can be consolidated onto fewer, highly scalable, highly reliable enterprise-class servers like the ProLiant DL580 and ProLiant DL760. On these servers, multiple hardware configurations and operating systems can co-exist and be easily updated ... plus, the more effectively server utilization boosts the return on investment (ROI).
