Nth Generation and Compaq Serve Childrens Hospital
The Challenge
With rapid growth in its caseload, an insatiable demand for high-tech patient services, and a fast-track merger with a neighboring hospital, the IS Department at Childrens Hospital in San Diego faced a daunting challenge. Who could help this 700 physician, 3,000 employee, 7x24 healthcare system meet its demanding information management, processing and storage requirements?
The Experts
Mary Hart, Compaqs local Account Manager, recommended Nth
Generation Computing, the leader in designing and implementing Compaq
enterprise solutions. With over 20 years experience designing mission-critical
enterprise solutions and with over 150 Storage Area Networks (SAN)
installed nationwide, Nth Generation leads the industry in providing
Compaq-based solutions to solve business problems. After thorough
business and technical consultations with Childrens Hospital
and an in-depth analysis, Nth Generation designed a high performance,
high availability infrastructure that reduced costs, simplified
system and data management, and decreased IT support requirements.
The Solution
used Compaq front end, application, and database servers to consolidate
and organize the hospitals business administration applications.
Nth then created a data warehouse for storing and managing Childrens
rapidly growing databases using a fibre-channel switched Compaq
SAN. Finally, Nth Generation provided 7x24 backup services with
a high speed Compaq Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS) hosting four
Compaq DLT tapes using Compaqs Module Data Router (MDR) software.
Nth Generations Compaq solution for Childrens
Hospital is based on open standards. This gives the hospital confidence
to adopt the latest healthcare technologies and choose best-in-breed
medical solutions as they are developed, knowing that their commitment
to hospital-wide integration can be honored. In addition, Childrens
new infrastructure will scale quickly to address the overwhelming
growth and demand spikes facing one the nations leading pediatric
trauma centers.
Nth University
Childrens Hospital also benefited from Nth Generations
commitment to client education and knowledge transfer. Nth University
was founded three years ago to offer comprehensive instructor-led
training from the basics of information technology to advanced SAN
architecture and implementation. Nth Generation has invested over
a million dollars in this training facility in San Diego to provide
students with the latest in technology for hands-on learning. Childrens
Hospital has already sent three of IT employees through Nth Universitys
renowned Storage Area Networks classes.
The Bottom Line
Thanks to Nth Generations expertise and commitment to client
service, Childrens Hospital has reduced costs while bringing
order to a rapidly growing environment. Heterogeneous medical technologies
can be adopted and managed across Childrens campus thanks
to Compaqs open architecture. Nth Generations knowledge
and service coupled with Compaq technology have created a comprehensive
healthcare business solution, enabling Childrens Hospital
to become the #7 pediatric facility in the United States while handling
125 child trauma cases per month and providing care to more than
350,000 children in San Diego County.
